You’ve invested in a great copy, branding, design and development. Your website is open to the public and it’s awing anyone who looks at it. Now what?
What do you do with it now?
I’ve written an article in the past on 5 ways to “work” your website, but that article talks about how to get your website out there so that it converts people who visit it, but this article is going to talk about your backend.
Websites are built from a bunch of different pieces of software put together, with media components (images and videos), sprinkled with custom code and a lot of text.
It’s a puzzle that has been carefully assembled so that all of the pieces fit together to form one beautiful cohesive image.
But just because all the pieces have been fit together, doesn’t mean that they still aren’t individual pieces.
If the finished puzzle is on a table, and someone comes over and accidentally knows the table over, the pieces will fall to the ground and disassemble.
Your website is in constant motion behind the scenes. It kind of has a life of it’s own.
Software gets updated, manually or automatically, and outside integrations with payment software or booking calendars, or a membership component are all working together.
Without you even knowing it, the technical side of your website can “disassemble” and a few pieces of the site may break…and you would never know.
A website needs to be maintained.
Software needs to be regularly upgraded and the website needs to be tested on a regular basis. If it’s not, the one wrong thing can break (a few times it has been the contact form…ouch!) and that leads to lost opportunities.
This is not meant to scare you, but meant to make you aware that although you’re killing it on the front end with your marketing, everything can go into the toilet if you’re not maintaining your backend.
That’s why I made a decision in 2016 to include 1 year of tech support, including a thorough monthly website check-up, to every single website package I offer. I made a vow that every website I deliver work.
